Tata Motors showcased the Hornbill HBX Concept at the Auto Expo 2020. It was very well received by the audience and what is even more impressive is that Tata said that the production-spec Hornbill HBX will carry 95 percent of the design elements as the HBX Concept. The HBX is also expected to come in an EV avatar sooner or later. So, here is a production render of the Hornbill HBX done by Electric Vehicle Web. The render helps us in getting a good idea about how the new micro-SUV from Tata Motors might look like when it is finally launched.
From the images, we can see that the render is very close to the concept that we saw at the Auto Expo 2020. It gets a split headlamp design just like we have seen on the Harrier and the recently launched Safari. So, there is an LED Daytime Running Lamp placed above and the actual headlamp is placed below in the bumper. Due to which the fog lamps are placed in the lower half of the bumper. However, other design elements are inspired by the Nexon EV. So, the grille, which is finished in piano black gets a blue EV badging, the lower half the air dam gets tri-arrow design out of which some are finished in blue enhancing on the EV element. The fog lamp surrounds are also finished in a blue accent. We have seen similar design elements on the Nexon EV and they all do look really attractive on the Hornbill HBX EV. The render is also finished in Nexon EVs Signature Teal Blue exterior colour. There is also a faux skid plate present to enhance the SUV stance.
At the side, we get the same alloy wheels that we have seen on the Nexon EV. The A, B and C pillar and the outside rearview mirror are finished in black and the roof is finished in contrasting white giving a floating roof effect. The window beltline is coloured blue. There is also an EV badging on the front half of the door. There is chunky body cladding, running all around the vehicle, giving an effect of ruggedness. While the front doors get conventional body-coloured door handles, the rear door handles are placed on the C-pillar which gives a two-door look to the Hornbill HBX. We have seen this type of door handle design on the Tata Altroz, Maruti Suzuki Swift and the upcoming Hyundai AX1 micro-SUV which will also compete with the Tata HBX. The render does not show us how the rear of the HBX EV will look like.

The Hornbill HBX will also be built on Tata’s ALFA platform which stands for ‘Agile Light Flexible Advanced’. We first saw this platform on the Altroz premium hatchback The EV variant will also be powered by the Ziptron electric technology that we have seen on the Nexon EV. However, the battery capacity, power outputs and driving range will be less than the Nexon EV.
According to Electric Vehicle Web, the max power output should be 100 PS with a peak torque output of 200Nm. The ARAI range should be around 300 km. However, the real-world range will be less than that. The battery and power train should have an 8-year/1.6 lakh km warranty and it will come with DC fast-charging capability.
