Also, Mahindra is a more mainstream band in India. If it launches a premium pickup truck, it can reach a wider audience. Also, this can be beneficial for people looking for a reliable off-roader that can also carry a decent amount of luggage.
But the bigger reason is Toyota. Yes, the Hilux is currently being planned and tested for India. The Hilux is a global product that has a legendary reputation for being reliable and great off-road. To give it competition, Mahindra does have the right type of platform, brand, engines and technology.

If launched, this Thar pickup will get the same engine options as the Thar 5-door. It will get a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. Mahindra might retune this engine for more performance. It will come with manual and automatic gearbox options. The car will also come equipped with a 4×4 drivetrain. It will also carry most of its features from the Thar 5-door. Mahindra might skimp some features to differentiate the two models. Pricing wise, it is expected to start from Rs 16 lakhs.
