New details of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 4×2 leaked online

It is no secret the country’s largest utility vehicle manufacturer Mahindra will be launching the more affordable RWD variants of its immensely popular lifestyle off-roading SUV Thar this month. However, recently even before the official unveiling of the said vehicle, a few leaked documents bearing the engine and feature specifications were leaked online.

The pictures that surfaced online reveal that the all-new 4×2 Mahindra Thar variants will come with two engine options – a petrol and a diesel engine. The first option will be a 2.0-liter turbocharged mStallion TGDi petrol engine that will produce around 150 PS of power along with 320 Nm of torque. This petrol mill will be only offered with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Additionally, the second engine option will be the 1.5-liter diesel engine will be shared with the XUV300. The D117 CRDe diesel motor will generate a maximum of 117 PS of power but will manage to produce a healthy 300 Nm of torque. Unlike the petrol engine, this will come mated only with a six-speed manual transmission.

The new Mahindra Thar RWD models will have a decent number of features. And according to the leaked documents it will come equipped with  18-inch alloy wheels, electronic ORVMs, fog lights, black bumpers, and moulded exterior steps. Additionally, regardless of the engine choice, the hardtop will come standard on all RWD models. The Thar 4×2 range on the interior will come with features like cruise control, ESP, and a touchscreen infotainment system with speakers positioned on the roof.

Additionally the leaked images also revealed that two new color options will be offered with the new Thar. The first will be an Everest White and the second will be a Blazing Bronze. Recently a Blazing Bronze Mahindra Thar rear-wheel drive was spotted at a dealer outlet.

The Mahindra Thar in Blazing Bronze that was seen in the dealer outlet was missing its 4X4 insignia on the rear fender. The Mahindra Thar with rear-wheel drive is anticipated to keep the four colour options that the four-wheel drive version of the SUV presently offers, in addition to the Blazing Bronze and Everest White. The Thar is currently available in four colour choices: Red Rage, Galaxy Grey, Napoli Black, and Aquamarine. Rocky Beige and Mystic Copper were two more colour choices for the Thar, both of which Mahindra stopped producing at the start of 2022.

As per the recent official GST council meeting, the definition of SUVs has been changed. The official press release stated “The higher rate of compensation cess of 22% is applicable to motor vehicle fulfilling all four conditions, namely, it is popularly known as SUV, has engine capacity exceeding 1500 cc, length exceeding 4000 mm and a ground clearance of 170 mm or above” And as the Mahindra Thar measures in under 4000 mm in length, does not qualify to be called a full sized SUV, thus attracting lower tax rates.

This is probably one of the reasons that Mahindra will now be offering these RWD variants. The removal of the bulky 4×4 system and addition of smaller displacement engines will allow the company to price the upcoming RWD Thar variants aggressively thus helping them in increasing volumes.
