Tata Altroz Sports with turbo-petrol engine to take on Hyundai i20 N-Line

Tata launched the Altroz i-Turbo almost a year ago, however, the overall response to the more powerful iteration of the standard Altroz has been lukewarm in all these months. However, Tata hasn’t given up yet on its attempt and is set to unveil a more powerful version of the Altroz. Touted to be called Altroz Sport, the new more powerful iteration of the Altroz will make its public debut at the Auto Expo 2023.

According to Zigwheels, the new Tata Altroz Sport will get a more powerful state of tune for the 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine which is already present in the Altroz i-Turbo. If reports are to be believed, this engine will be in the same state of tune as the standard petrol-powered version of the Nexon. It means that the turbocharged petrol engine of the Altroz Sport might claim a maximum power output of 120 PS and a peak torque output of 172 Nm.

With these power and torque figures, the Tata Altroz Sport will come across as a more potent rival to the Hyundai i20 N-Line, which also produces the exactly same power and torque outputs. The Altroz Sport might also come with a 6-speed manual gearbox, replacing the 5-speed unit of the current Altroz i-Turbo. The availability of a manual gearbox will give the Altroz Sport an edge over the i20 N-Line, which is not available with a manual gearbox. Currently, the Hyundai i20 N-Line is offered with options of a 6-speed iMT and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Tata Altroz i-Turbo

The Altroz i-Turbo was launched by Tata Motors at the beginning of 2022. Its 110 PS of power and 140 Nm of torque outputs were higher than the standard Altroz, which claims 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. However, even these higher power and torque outputs seemed not to be too high for the driving enthusiasts, who found the overall performance decent, but not enthusiastic. The new higher state of tune for the turbocharged petrol engine, which will be derived from the Nexon, is expected to give the Altroz the much-needed dose of thrill and responsiveness.

The Tata Altroz is currently offered with three engine options – 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol, 1.5-litre diesel and 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Out of these three powertrain options, the diesel will be discontinued in the coming weeks due to the RDE norms coming into effect from April 2023. The Altroz i-Turbo might also get replaced with this new Altroz Sport version, which will naturally make it the most driver-friendly version of the premium hatchback from Tata Motors.
