Maruti has had an eventful start to 2023. At the Auto Expo, it showed its intentions of targeting the EV and SUV segment. The Fronx is one SUV that Maruti hopes will change the Indian market. Maruti is targeting the Fronx to a younger, more fast-paced audience. Still, Maruti knows that running costs will be an important aspect. So Maruti is working on a CNG version of the Fronx. In today’s article, let’s talk about the Maruti CNG SUV.
CNG?
As stated above, the Fronx is a breath of fresh air in Maruti’s lineup. With its coupe SUV design, it clearly stands out in the sea of SUVs. Also, Maruti has given it a 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine adding that extra oomph. So then why a CNG option? Maruti knows that it can’t abandon its core audience which favors mileage and practicality. So Maruti could give it a CNG setup on the 1.2-litre engine. With a CNG setup, Maruti could target a wider audience.
What else could change?
We don’t expect any exterior changes on the CNG variant. Maruti may add 1-2 CNG badges here and there. The second most obvious change will be the addition of a CNG tank in the boot. The CNG will be paired to the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine capable of producing bhp and Nm of torque. Performance figures may drop slightly due to the CNG technology.
Maruti CNG SUV – Launch timeline
For now, Maruti is focusing on launching the petrol-powered Fronx. Maruti has started testing the Fronx CNG, but it will be launched a few months after the Fronx Petrol. The Fronx CNG could be launched in the second half of 2023. What about the pricing? It will be around Rs 1-lakh more expensive than similarly priced petrol variants.
