Mahindra Thar 4×2 base variant: India’s most affordable Thar in a walkaround video

Mahindra recently launched a more affordable version of Thar 4×2 SUV in the market. Price for the 4×2 Thar starts at Rs 9.99 lakh, ex-showroom and that is what makes it an attractive buy. Many people have started buying the RWD version of Mahindra Thar however, we have rarely seen anyone go for the base variant. The reason for that is the waiting period. For the base variant, there is a long waiting period when compared to the higher variant. Here we have a video where the base AX variant of Mahindra Thar RWD version is shows inside out.

The video has been uploaded by Yash9w on his YouTube channel. In this video, the vlogger talks about all the changes that are there in the base AX model when compared to the LX version. The SUV seen here is the AX hard top variant. The SUV looks just like a regular version from outside. There are halogen headlamps, bonnet clips, signature grille and rugged looking front bumper. The SUV however misses out on features like fog lamps and LED DRLs on the fender. The turn indicators can still be seen there.

Coming to the side profile, the SUV is available with steel rims only. They smaller in size to. The base variant gets 16 inch steel rims wrapped with AT tyres. The white colour wheels look great on the base variant and they don’t look small too. There is no antenna on the fender and the engine badge has also been removed in the RWD version. The foot rests of the base variant is all metal and the ORVMs cannot be adjusted electrically and at the rear the spare wheel is also steel rim. The tail lamps are the same on all variants and it comes with reflector on the bumper.

On the inside the car, looks almost the same as higher version. The seats are fabric and the instrument cluster is also the same. The major difference can be seen here is the missing touchscreen infotainment system, roof-mounted speakers, multi-function steering wheel and so on. The metal cage at the rear is also finished in Red shade instead of black. The SUV still offers traction control, idle start-stop system, manual AC, hill descent control and so on. As this is the RWD version, the 4×4 gear lever in the SUV is missing and that space has been modified into a storage space.

The RWD is available with both petrol and diesel engine options. Only the petrol option is available with automatic transmission. It uses the same 2.0 litre turbocharged engine. When it comes to diesel, Mahindra Thar RWD is powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine that generates 117 Ps and 300 Nm of peak torque. This engine is available with a manual gearbox only. The SUV does feel like a value-for-money product and does not look cheap at least from outside. Mahindra is offering decent number of features for this price. Mahindra is currently working on the 5-door version of Thar which is expected to be offered in both 2WD and 4×4 versions.
