The Tata Sumo is one of those childhood icons that has sadly been discontinued. The model was one of the most successful offerings from Tata Motors, and to this day, people remember this legendary vehicle. Scavenging through old videos, we recently found a video that provided an in-depth walkaround of the last Tata Sumo offered in the country. The video showcases the Tata Sumo Gold from both inside and outside and mentions all the important specifications of this beloved vehicle.
The video of one of the last Tata Sumo Gold MPVs has been shared on YouTube by Namaste Car on their channel. It starts with the presenter showing the front end of the car and mentioning that the Sumo Gold is the second-generation model of the car. The first generation of this iconic MPV was launched back in 1994. The video does not mention this, but the model has now been discontinued. Its discontinuation took place back in 2019 due to stringent emission norms and poor sales. The presenter then adds that the model was priced at Rs 7.50 lakh and went up to Rs 9 lakh. The one in the video is the mid-spec variant priced at Rs 8.50 lakh.
After this introduction, the presenter shows the front of the model. He mentions that it came with a simple, boxy design. Next, he shows the front grille with the Gold emblem engraved in it. Afterward, he shows the halogen headlamps and mentions that it was one of the first SUVs in the country. He adds that it was extremely popular in rural India due to its rugged nature, durability, and reliability. He also mentions that it was one of the first four-wheel drive SUVs in the country as well. The Indian military heavily used this vehicle in its fleet.

Following this, he shows the side profile of the vehicle and mentions that its length was around 4.2m, height was around 2m, and it had a ground clearance of around 182mm. Next, he shows the 15-inch steel wheels. He also mentions that it came with front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Next, he shares an interesting fact: the name of this vehicle did not come from sumo wrestlers of Japan. Instead, it came from the Tata Motors MD, Sumant Moolgaokar. He then shows the rear end of the car.
Next, he mentions that the car was based on the ladder-on-frame chassis, which was the same as the other highly popular Tata SUV, Safari. He adds that the Sumo Gold came equipped with a double wishbone suspension on the front, along with parabolic leaf spring suspension at the rear.
Following this, he shows the interior of the car. He first opens the rear door and shows the 527 liters of boot space and then moves to the middle row. The presenter then adds that the car has a pretty basic interior. The seats are covered in fabric upholstery, and the feature list is pretty much non-existent. He mentions that the model comes with air conditioning, and the top-end variant also receives vents in the middle row with the help of the overhead blower. After this, he shows the center console, dashboard, and the steering wheel of the car.
Lastly, he opens up the bonnet and shows the engine of the Sumo Gold. He mentions that it comes equipped with an in-line four-cylinder 3000cc turbocharged intercooled diesel engine. He adds that this engine is capable of producing a maximum of 85 PS of power and 250 Nm of torque. Next, he mentions that it has a top speed of 140 kmph. Lastly, he mentions that it has a 65-liter fuel tank and a fuel efficiency of 15 kmpl.
