Your car’s infotainment system can be used to make online payments: Here’s how

ToneTag recently unveiled a groundbreaking payment system known as ‘Pay-by-Car,’ showcased on an MG Hector at the Global Fintech Fest. This innovative technology is set to revolutionize payments in internet-enabled cars, offering a convenient and secure way to make transactions without the need for traditional wallets or smartphones.

In collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), ToneTag has paved the way for voice-enabled payments through a car’s infotainment system. This partnership aims to simplify the payment process and enhance user convenience, especially during activities like refueling at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) fuel stations.

Here’s a closer look at how ‘Pay-by-Car’ functions:

1. Fuel Payments Made Easy: Users with Pay-by-Car-enabled vehicles can effortlessly select a nearby BPCL petrol pump directly through the infotainment system. This intuitive feature streamlines the process of choosing the desired fuel station.

2. Customizable Payments: Once the fuel station is selected, the system prompts the driver to input the specific amount they wish to pay for the fuel. This personalized approach ensures that users have full control over their transactions.

3. Seamless Notification: After confirming the payment amount, the chosen petrol pump receives a notification indicating the request for a digital fuel refill. This real-time communication between the car and the station ensures a smooth and efficient process.

4. Fast and Secure Deductions: The Pay-by-Car system deducts the specified amount seamlessly using the UPI linked to the vehicle’s FASTag. Users can choose to confirm the transaction either by entering a password on the car’s infotainment screen or via voice commands, adding an extra layer of security.

5. Refund Provision: In the event that a user pays for fuel but encounters difficulties accessing the petrol station, the system includes a provision for refunds. Within 48 hours, the refunded amount is initiated, ensuring peace of mind for users.

The ‘Pay-by-Car’ payment system relies on high-wave frequency communication and leverages the Opera Network for Digital Communication (ONDC), a platform that facilitates contactless transactions. This innovative approach not only ensures security but also enhances the overall convenience of payments.

The applications of the Pay-by-Car system extend beyond fuel payments. Users can utilize this advanced payment method to pay for various services, including coffee at cafes, groceries at stores, meals at restaurants, and even transactions with other drivers at outlets. This versatility makes it a valuable addition to the digital payment landscape.
ToneTag’s collaboration with NPCI has opened doors to a new era of voice-enabled payments within internet-enabled cars. This technology is set to make transactions smoother and more accessible, eliminating the need for physical wallets or smartphones during essential activities like refueling.

Furthermore, the concept car displayed at the Global Fintech Fest, modeled on the MG Hector, is just the beginning. ToneTag is actively exploring opportunities to introduce this feature in other car brands, including Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, Kia, and Mahindra, making ‘Pay-by-Car’ a promising development in the world of digital payments.
