Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the PV market, with eight out of the top 10 cars hailing from its stable. However, the Jimny, launched in June this year, remains outside this exclusive list.

The top spot in the rankings is held by last month’s best-selling car, the Maruti Swift, which has climbed from the 10th position in August 2022. Following closely behind is Maruti’s premium offering, the Baleno, which maintains its second position from the previous month.

The WagonR secures the third position, achieving a 20% increase in sales compared to the previous month. This subcompact car held the title of the best-selling car in June.

Here’s a snapshot of the Top 10 PVs in August 2023:

SUV-style vehicles continue to capture the interest of Indian consumers, with two SUVs securing positions in the top 5 models of August 2023. Maruti Suzuki’s subcompact SUV, the Vitara Brezza, claims the fourth spot, despite a 12% decline in sales compared to the previous month. Tata Motors’ Punch, a compact SUV, grabs the fifth position with a 21% month-on-month increase in sales.

SUVs make up 40% of the Top 10 PVs list, reflecting the ongoing preference for these versatile vehicles. Tata Motors’ Nexon SUV, a strong contender, did not make it to the August list. However, with the recent launch of the facelifted Nexon and Nexon.ev, it is expected to return to the Top 10 PVs list in the coming months.

Maruti Suzuki’s Alto, once India’s favorite hatchback, continues to be absent from the list for another month. It held the number one position for nearly 16 consecutive fiscal years until FY20 when it was surpassed by the Swift.

Hyundai, the country’s second-largest carmaker, makes its entry into the Top 10 list, securing the sixth spot with its best-selling model, the Creta, achieving sales of 13,832 units.
Maruti Suzuki’s Dzire secures the seventh position, with a slight decline in sales compared to the previous month. The eighth spot is claimed by the people carrier, Ertiga, with 12,315 units sold, reflecting a 14% decrease compared to July.

Maruti’s new entrant, the Fronx, a coupe-styled subcompact SUV, takes the ninth position, experiencing an 8% month-on-month drop in sales. Finally, the 10th spot is occupied by Maruti’s Eeco, with 11,859 units sold, representing a 1.5% month-on-month decline.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara just misses the Top 10 PVs list, falling short by a mere 41 units compared to the Eeco. Nevertheless, the Grand Vitara records substantial growth of over 30% compared to July 2023. Maruti Suzuki’s consistent presence in the Top 10 PVs list underscores its continued dominance in India’s passenger vehicle market.
