Hyundai Verna safety rating out! Hyundai’s safest car?

Car safety has gained a lot of traction in the last few years. Indian brands like Tata and Mahindra started the trend, and then other manufacturers like Volkswagen and Skoda also proved their mettle. Now joining this list is Hyundai with the Verna scoring a 5-star rating from GNCAP. This makes the Verna the safest car in Hyundai’s current portfolio. In today’s article, let’s talk about the Hyundai Verna safety rating.

The Hyundai Verna has managed to score 5 stars in both adult occupant protection and child occupant protection. The Verna also passed the ESC test. It also passed the UN 127 and GTR9  pedestrian protection norms.

The Verna managed to score 28.18 out of 34 in the adult occupant test. Its body shell was rated unstable and not capable of withstanding more load. The Verna offered good protection to the head and neck of both the driver and passengers. The passenger had good chest protection, but the driver had marginal chest protection. Driver and passenger knees showed marginal protection, while the footwell area was rated unstable. 

In the side impact test, the Verna offered good protection to the head, pelvis and abdomen, but only adequate protection to the chest region. In the side pole impact test, the Verna was rated ‘OK’ with good protection to the head and pelvis, adequate protection to the abdomen & marginal protection to the chest. 

Child occupant scores

Verna scored 42 points out of 49 points. GNCAP tested the 18-month and 3-year-old dummies with both seats facing rearward. The i-size anchorages and support leg helped in preventing head exposure in a frontal crash. The CRS also offered full-side impact protection.

The Hyundai Verna comes with a plethora of active and passive safety features. It comes with standard safety features like 6 airbags, all 3-point seatbelts, seat belt reminder (all seats), rear defogger, ISOFIX, and emergency stop signal. Other safety features include ESC with VSM, hill start assist control, all disc brakes, Electronic parking brake, TPMS etc. 

There is also level-2 ADAS on the Verna adding that extra layer of safety. ADAS features include forward collision warning, forward collision avoidance assist (car, pedestrian, cycle, junction turning), blind spot collision warning & avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, driver attention warning, safe exit warning, adaptive cruise control, rear cross collision & avoidance assist, high beam assist & leading vehicle departure alert.

The Hyundai Verna comes with two petrol engine options. We have a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine capable of producing & Nm of torque. Transmission options include a manual and a CVT gearbox. While the second option is a 1.5-litre turbo petrol capable of producing 157bhp and 253Nm of torque. Transmission options include a manual and DCT gearbox. 

Feature-wise, the Verna comes with features like a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment system, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, an electronic parking brake, heated & ventilated seats, 64-colour ambient light, an electric sunroof, ADAS level-2, paddle shifters, a powered driver seat, 6-airbags, TPMS and all-disc brakes etc. 

Pricing and rivals

The pricing of the Hyundai Verna starts from Rs 13.06 lakh and goes to Rs 20.50 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). It will continue to rival the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia, and Honda City. With the 5-star rating, Verna has titled the balance of this segment in its favour to some extent.
