The Japanese automaker Suzuki, at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, took the covers off the new 2024 Swift. This new model will be sold as the Maruti Swift in India, and it will most likely be launched early next year. Along with its heavily redesigned exterior, the company at the Auto Show revealed this new hatchback’s brand-new 3-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine. According to reports, this new engine has been codenamed Z12, and it will offer a fuel efficiency of 30+ kmpl in India.
2024 Maruti Swift: New Z12 Engine
This all-new Z12 engine will replace Maruti Suzuki’s time-tested current K-series 1.2-liter, 4-cylinder powerplant. Presently, the company has refrained from sharing the exact power and other important specifications. However, reports have stated that this time around the company has placed its focus on fuel efficiency. Apart from this, it is expected that this engine will come with an increase in torque compared to the older K12 unit.

According to reports, one of the key engineering features that make the Z12 engine stand out is its unique cylinder design. Each cylinder boasts a capacity of 400cc, which aligns with the ideal volumetric efficiency range of 350cc to 400cc. This configuration is aimed at improving the engine’s torque, particularly useful for city driving conditions. It has also been stated that the trade-off for this new additional torque will be the K12’s free-revving nature. The stronger low-end pulling power is being prioritized for smoother and more robust performance in city traffic.
Hybrid Technology of the Z12 Engine
The company at the Japanese Mobility Show showcased the Swift with the Z12 Hybrid engine. Unlike the mild Hybrid K12 engine, the new engine gets a strong hybrid integration. Some reports claim that it will come to India, while others believe that the company will only offer this engine in its naturally aspirated format. What Maruti Suzuki will offer in India with the Swift and other vehicles in its lineup is yet to be seen. Reports have claimed that this powertrain combination will offer around 35 kmpl with its hybrid technology and smaller capacity engine.
Maruti Suzuki Z12 Engine Emissions
Reports have also emphasized that, apart from enhancing performance, the new Z12 engine has a strong focus on environmental friendliness. By reducing the number of cylinders to three, the company has lowered the overall engine weight. This will not only contribute to lower emissions by emitting fewer fumes but also aligns with the increasingly stringent emissions regulations throughout the globe. This new engine will help Maruti Suzuki maintain its compliance with Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) targets, especially in its key market, India.
Other Maruti Models Could Feature This New Engine
Presently, the company has not revealed any of its plans to offer this new engine on other models. However, once launched, it is highly likely that the new Z-Series engine will be seen in vehicles such as the Baleno, Fronx, Ignis, and Eeco. Moreover, the Z-Series could offer different engine capacities in the future, potentially replacing various K-Series powerplants currently in use.
