We recently interviewed Shailesh Chandra, MD of Tata Motors. In this interview, we talked about the brand EV plan, Harrier/Safari petrol and more. Another important thing we discussed was something a lot of you have been asking us about, what is the future of diesel? According to Shailesh Ji, the demand for diesel engines is on a steady decline, and that decline will continue to happen due to stricter norms. Diesel will be replaced by EVs, CNG and other hybrid/flex-fuel options. However, he stated that as a customer you should look at options at the current stage. If diesel fits your usage, then you should buy it. We also asked him when diesel will cease to exist. According to him, it depends on the regulations. Most probably small diesel engines would be killed by BS7 and then diesel would be only restricted to bigger SUVs, he added.
