Bharat New Car Assessment programme was launched in August. It is modelled on Global NCAP but is lightly tweaked for Indian needs. The programme is aimed at improving the safety aspect in the country. Bharat NCAP came into effect in October, but the tests will only commence in December. According to officials, this delay is due to the festival season. BNCAP will asses the car on three features – Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection and Safety Assist technologies. BNCAP will award a rating ranging from zero stars to five stars as per the Automotive Indian Standard (AIS) based on their performance.

Though the test is not mandatory, BNCAP has received a good response from manufacturers. Tata Motors is the first company to have applied for BNCAP ratings. The new Harrier and Safari will be the first cars to be tested by BNCAP. Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai are also sending three cars each, while Mahindra is sending four models for testing. Like GNCAP, BNCAP will pick three base variants of each model.

Not all manufacturers are keen to send their cars in the first round. European manufacturers like Renault, Volkswagen group and Stellantis group are not going to send their cars right away. The viewpoint of some brands is that they have not yet decided on which models to send. Some have stated that their cars already come with a 5-star rating from GNCAP, so will not opt for BNCAP ratings immediately.
