Affordable cars with 5-star safety rating – Tata Punch

Based on the Alfa Architecture, Tata Punch is the most affordable car with 5-star safety rating. The SUV has a score of 16.45 out of 17 for adults and 40.89 out of 49 for child safety. Now although the scores are as per older safety norms, the Punch may score 5-star in current safety norms as well. Tata Punch is a micro SUV and has done well for the brand as they sold 2 lakh units in a quick duration. In fact it is one of the best selling SUVs in India. Tata Punch is priced between Rs 7.12 lakh to Rs 12.05 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Tata Altroz

Next, we have another Tata product, the Altroz. Tata Altroz was the first car to come with Tata’s Alfa Architecture. Also, Tata were confident enough with the Altroz as the safety ratings were released before the car was launched. Talking about numbers, the Altroz scored 16.13 out of 17 for Adults and 29 out of 49 for child safety. Tata Altroz is the only hatchback to come with such impressive safety ratings. Also, it is the only hatchback to come with an option for diesel engine. Tata Altroz is priced between Rs 7.08 lakh to Rs 13.01 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

The third car on the list is again a Tata car, the Nexon. In fact Tata Nexon became the first Indian car to achieve the milestone of 5-star safety rating. The SUV was tested by Global Ncap in 2018 and successfully achieved a 5-star rating. The Nexon scored 16.06 out of 17 for adult safety and 25 out of 49 for child safety. Today, Nexon is in the third form after it received a significant facelift. The SUV is now more feature loaded and is enjoying the demand. The Nexon gradually earned the title of best selling SUV in India and is still ruling the segment. Tata Nexon is priced between Rs 9.55 lakh and Rs 18.72 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Mahindra XUV300

Soon after the Tata Nexon, another Indian brand to score 5-star at Global Ncap was the Mahindra XUV300. It is the direct competitor of Nexon but couldn’t do well against the Nexon, despite having a powerful engine. The XUV300 scored 16.42 out 17 for adults and an impressive 37.44 out of 49 for child safety. Currently, the XUV300 feels outdated against the competition but we will soon see a new version of the SUV. The test mule XUV300 facelift has been spotted multiple times and we can expect some significant updates on the car.

Skoda Slavia & Volkswagen Virtus

After the domination of Indian automakers, we have the mighty Germans which are also known for safer cars. We are talking about the two hot sedans, the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus. Both these sedans have scored 5-star safety ratings, becoming the first affordable sedans in India to achieve the milestone. The sedans were tested under more strict regulations in which they scored 29.71 out of 34 for Adults and 42 out of 49 for child safety.

They both scored identical ratings for a very simple fact that they share the same platform, chassis, and engine. Both are built on MQB A0 IN platform which is developed specifically for India. These are the same sedans with different appearance slotted under different brands. The Skoda Slavia has been priced between Rs 12.84 lakh to Rs 22.50 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Whereas the Volkswagen Virtus is priced between Rs 13.57 lakh to Rs 22.79 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). 

Skoda Kushaq & Volkswagen Taigun 

Another German cars that share chemistry are the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. Their relationship is similar to what Slavia and Virtus share with each other. In fact, the MQB A0 IN platform is the common platform for all these four cars. They share a similar score of 42 from 49 for child safety. However for adult safety there is a marginal difference. The Kushaq and Taigun have scored 29.64 out of 34 for adult safety. Overall, all the four German cars have secured very similar safety ratings, thanks to the rigid platform. Talking about the pricing, the Skoda Kushaq has been priced between Rs 12.83 lakh to Rs 23.54 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Whereas the VW Taigun is priced between Rs 13.73 lakh to Rs 23.38 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Lastly, we have the latest entrant to the 5-star rated family, the Hyundai Verna. It is a Slavia/Virtus competitor which also became the first Hyundai in India to achieve this goal. The Verna was recently tested by Global Ncap wherein the sedan scored the 5-star rating. Talking about the numbers, Hyundai Verna has scored 28.18 out of 34 for child safety and 42 out of 49 for adult safety. Verna is already the most feature loaded and the most powerful car in the segment. But the impressive safety ratings makes the sedan a perfect all-rounder.
