The Punch EV is going to be Tata’s next big launch in the affordable EV space. This EV has been spotted a fair few times in testing and is expected to get some subtle changes over the ICE model. For starters, we could see a bonnet-wide DRL design like other newer Tata EVs. We also expect LED headlamps, LED DRLs and different sets of alloys. In the interiors, Tata could add several new features like an electronic parking brake, rotary gearbox, all disc brakes, connected car technology, a bigger touchscreen and a 360-degree camera. Range-wise, we could see it comes with a real-world range of 270km to 300km. Powering this battery will be the new Gen-2 motor Tata debuted with the Nexon, but it will be a bit detuned for the Punch. The Punch EV is expected to be launched in the first half of 2024, and it could be priced between Rs 13.5 lakh to Rs 17 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

WagonR EV (eWX)

The Maruti WagonR EV has been in the works for a long time it was assumed that Maruti had dropped this project altogether. However, recently, Maruti showcased its EV plan, which includes 6 new EVs. Maruti didn’t reveal the names, but showcased silhouettes of cars. One of them seems to be the WagonR EV. At the Tokyo Motor Show, Suzuki unveiled the eWX concept. The eWX comes with a tall boy design similar to the WagonR. Actually, the eWX concept does look like it has evolved from the WagonR. The only problem is that the eWX is a kei car, so it is smaller than the S-Presso sold in India. Let’s see if Maruti does tweak and bring the eWX as WagonR EV to India. Maruti didn’t reveal the exact specifications but stated a claimed range of 230km. The WagonR EV or eWX could come to India after the launch of eVX in 2025.

Upcoming electric cars under Rs 15 lakhs – Tata Altroz EV

It seems like Tata has forgotten about the Altroz EV. It was one of the first concept EVs that Tata showcased, but we have yet to see its production version. Still, we are hopeful, because Tata has confirmed that it plans to convert all its ICE cars into EVs. The production version of the Altroz EV could come with a new design, could it get a connected DRL design like other newer Tata EVs? Only time will tell. Under the hood, we can expect a 26kWh to 30kWh battery pack, giving it a real-world range of around 270km. It will also get the gen-2 motor, which is lighter and more efficient. We can expect a good performance on the Altroz EV. The pricing of the Altroz EV could start from Rs 14 lakh and go to Rs 18 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

MG is going to bring a beefed-up version of the Comet SUV to India. It already sells this Comet-based SUV in China called the Yep. Dimensions-wise, the Yep is 3,381mm in length, making it even smaller than the S-Presso. MG has already patented this design in India, hinting that the launch is imminent. In India, the Yep will share its battery and motor with the Comet. We could see a 17.3kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 230km. Like the Comet, the Yep comes with a premium fit & finish. It is also loaded with features like a digital instrument cluster, a big infotainment system, a 360-degree camera, electrically adjustable seats, etc. The recent news of JSW and MG’s collaboration is a positive sign. This means we could see this Comet-based SUV by the end of 2025 or early 2025. We can expect a starting price of Rs 10 lakh and going to Rs 14 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

In South Korea, Hyundai is working on the Casper EV, and we can expect similar specifications on the Exter EV. Specs-wise, we could see a 40kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 300km to 350km. Hyundai could also keep a tab on the launch of Punch EV and outdo Tata in this aspect. There is no official confirmation from Tata, but we can expect the Exter EV in the next two years.
