This state has the highest accident spots in India

Car accidents are a major problem in India. Each year several major accidents happen in the country killing a lot of people. This is not surprising considering the population, safety norms and vast network of roads. The majority of accidents happen on highways. Some spots have a higher frequency of accidents, and the government marks them as blackspots. Tamil Naidu has the highest number of blackspots in the country. So let’s talk about the accident spots in India.

What are blackspots?

Before diving into the data, first, let’s understand how spots are termed as blackspots. Black spots are places on national highways of about 500m in which at least 5 road accidents have taken place in the last three years, resulting in 10 fatalities or more. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transports and Highways (MoRTH) mark such spots as blackspots. 

Accident spots – State-wise data

Nitin Gadkari recently stated that Tamil Naidu has the highest number of blackspots in the country. This data is based on the data for 2018-2020 received from different states and union territories. Talking about the data, Tamil Naidu has 748 identified black spots on national highways, followed by West Bengal and Telangana with 701 and 485 blackspots, respectively. 

Costs

The government has spent a lot of amounts to maintain and repair such blackspots. Reportedly, it has spent Rs 15,702 crore for repair and maintenance, including measures taken to rectify such spots to lower the accident rate. The report didn’t state if such measures are effective or not for the time being.
