Kia is evaluating hybrid cars for the Indian market. Kia India’s MD & CEO, Tae-Jin Park, stated that the brand is studying the possibility of bringing new technologies like hybrid to replace diesel. He also stated the brand will continue selling diesel engines as long as the regulations allow. However, Kia wants to stay prepared for the eventual discontinuation of diesel engines.
What to expect?
Kia is already working on electrifying the current 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine options in its lineup. Kia does have experience in making hybrid cars as it has the tech in its global markets. However, in India, it will need a way to balance the costs. Localisation of the hybrid motor and battery pack could be of utmost importance. Eventually, the brand could launch the hybrid setup on the Seltos, Carens and its upcoming sub-4m SUV.
Kia Seltos hybrid – Launch
Kia plans to launch this strong hybrid setup on its upcoming sub-4m SUV, the Clavis. Clavis is expected to debut by the end of 2024 and launch is going to happen in 2025. So Kia’s hybrid setup could debut in 2025. After that, we can expect it to make its way onto the Seltos and Carens in the following years.
