Toyota is generally associated with reliability. The company has some exceptionally reliable engines in its line up. Among all, the 2.2-litre petrol & 2.8-litre diesel engines are popular in India. Whereas globally, the car maker has some performance oriented turbo petrol engines. However in India, we only have one Toyota SUV to get a turbo petrol engine. And fortunately or unfortunately, that engine is not developed by Toyota!

Petrol SUVs In India – Toyota Taisor
Yes, it is the Toyota Taisor which comes with an option for a turbo petrol engine. The SUV is broadly offered with three engine options – 1.2-litre NA petrol engine, CNG, and 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. The 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine produces 99 bhp & 147.6 Nm of peak torque. The transmission options available are manual and torque converter automatic gearboxes. This engine is a powerful unit & offers peppy performance. Interestingly, all the three mentioned engines are manufactured by Suzuki! Talking about the price, the 1.0-litre turbo petrol variant of the Taisor is available between Rs 12.70 lakh & Rs 15.59 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

New Engines Coming
That said, we will soon likely get to see more turbo petrol engines from Toyota in India. With the emission norms getting stricter, the Euro 7 or the BS7 will force auto makers to switch to petrol engines. Manufacturing a diesel engine or transforming a BS6 diesel engine to BS7 will be a task for the auto makers. It is said that it will be a difficult task & could make the engines costly. So to keep the costs in check, auto manufacturers might prefer petrol engines once the BS7 norms come into action.

So along with other car brands, Toyota is also likely to shift to petrol engines. In fact some leaks have suggested that Toyota is already working on an all new 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. Reports suggest that this engine will be capable of producing 300 – 400 bhp & 400 – 549 Nm! So will the upcoming SUVs like the Fortuner & the Hilux be offered with this new engine? Well, as of now, the Fortuner & the Hilux will get an updated hybrid diesel engine. It is the same 2.8-litre diesel engine which will be paired with 48V battery for enhanced efficiency & improved performance. The new engine will likely debut in India by the end of this month with the upcoming Fortuner!
