The Auto Expo 2023 is just around the corner, and the anticipation for high-profile launches scheduled to take place there is hitting a new high with every passing day. Tata Motors is also planning big at the Auto Expo 2023, as it has already been confirmed that the Curvv and Avinya concepts will make their public debut at the Auto Expo. Now, rumours are that the all-electric versions of its range-topping SUVs, Harrier and Safari, will also be displayed at the Auto Expo 2023.
Based on the current versions of the Tata Harrier and Safari, the all-electric versions of these two SUVs will follow the same route as Tata Motors followed for the Nexon EV, Tigor EV and Tiago EV. It means that Tata Motors will retain the platforms and body styles of the current versions of the Harrier and Safari, with their cabins too being the same as their IC engine versions. However, the big change will be there under their hoods. The FCA-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine common to both the SUVs will be replaced by an all-electric powertrain consisting of an electric motor driving the front wheels and a lithium-ion battery.

While there are no details right now about the electric motor and battery powering the EV versions of Tata Harrier and Safari, it is expected that these all-electric SUVs might offer a claimed range of 500-520 km, thus translating to a real-world range of 450-475 km. If these two all-electric SUVs hit the market, the competition for all-electric midsize SUVs will see an uptick.
No petrol engine
The Tata Harrier and Safari are currently being offered with the only option of a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which produces 170 PS of maximum power and 350 Nm of maximum torque. Two transmission options – a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic – are on offer for both Harrier and Safari. These two new SUVs are also expected to get a facelifted version, with minor tweaks to the front and rear profiles and the inclusion of a few new features like an enhanced infotainment system and a comprehensive ADAS package. The all-electric versions might be based on these mildly-tweaked facelifted versions of the Harrier and Safari and will retain the list of features from the diesel-powered version of the SUVs.
Tata Motors has made it clear that the Harrier and Safari might not get a petrol powertrain, so launching the all-electric versions of these two SUVs will broaden the lineup and choice of powertrains for the customers.
