Hyundai Creta EV in the works: To challenge Maruti Suzuki’s electric SUV

The South Korean automaker Hyundai which currently holds the second position in the list of the top-selling car brands in India has recently been reported to be working on the development of an EV SUV that will be based on the Creta. According to reports the company is developing an all-electric Creta to further increase its share in the electric vehicle segment in the country. It has also been reported that the company is likely to unveil the production-ready EV SUV at the 2025 Auto Expo and it is expected to see series production by the last quarter of 2024.

According to reports, the company has codenamed the development of this SUV as project SU2i EV. Following its global debut at the 2025 Auto Expo, the vehicle will have its official launch later in the same year. It is also believed that the company will be launching this SUV to take on the recently reported Maruti EV SUV that has been codenamed YY8. The Creta will and the Maruti YY8 will both have their premiere at the Auto Expo 2025. Although unlike Hyundai Maruti will be displaying a concept of its EV SUV YY8 at this year’s Auto Expo.

According to sources, Hyundai is anticipating selling 20,000 to 25,000 units of the Creta EV annually in the country and coincidently it matches the Maruti Suzuki YY8 EV SUV volume projections. In addition to the Maruti Suzuki’s EV this all-electric Creta will also rival the likes of the Harrier EV which the country’s current largest electric vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors will most likely be showcasing at the Auto Expo 2023.

As of yet it has there is no information regarding the specifications of the drive train of the SUV but as the development of this EV picks up the pace we will get more information. In terms of pricing this forthcoming EV Creta could be priced in the range of Rs 15-30 lakh.

Currently Hyundai has only two electric vehicles in its portfolio in India which includes the Kona EV and the Ioniq 5 EV crossover. It is believed that the South Korean carmaker is taking a top down approach to expand its EV product lineup in India. Under this approach the company has first launched two vehicles via the CKD (Completely Knocked down) or CBU (Completely Built Unit) route. The second step in this approach is the prodction of an EV in the country itself based on an ICE vehicle which this EC Creta will be and finally it will produce a fully localized E-GMP platform based electric car in the country.

In other Hyundai news, the South Korean carmaker will most likely be unveiling the facelifted iteration of the Creta at the Auto Expo this month. The new Creta facelift will get substantial updates, especially in terms of features. The ADAS will be one of the highlights of the new Creta facelift. Hyundai has calibrated the ADAS for the Indian sub-continent region. The new Creta facelift will also get a fresh look with the new parametric style grille. The new mid-size SUV will have DRLs inbuilt into the grille of the car.
