Tata Motors which currently presides as the third largest carmaker in the country would not be at the spot where it is without the vision and execution of Mr. Ratan Tata. Sir Ratan Naval Tata the Indian industrialist and former chairman of Tata Sons who revolutionized the country with his company recently shared a picture of him with a Tata Indica hatchback on Instagram.

Sharing the nostalgic picture on Instagram the official handle of the Tata Sons Emeritus Ratan Tata said, “25 years ago, the launching of the Tata Indica was the birth of India’s indigenous passenger car industry. It brings back fond memories and has a special place in my heart for me”

In the picture, the Tata Sons heir can be seen standing next to the company’s and the country’s one of first indigenously developed passenger cars – the hatchback Indica. Mr. Tata brought this car from vision to reality with the help of his company and it led to one of the biggest revolutions in the Indian auto Industry.
Prior to the vehicle’s introduction, Sir Ratan Tata hinted about how the Indica will feature a spacious cabin and the fuel efficiency of a diesel vehicle. And following the launch the Tata Indica proved to be everything its former chairman had promised.
Additionally, it offered amenities like air conditioning and power windows, which were previously available exclusively in more expensive luxury vehicles. Among the imported foreign passenger vehicles, this one stood out. Indica seemed like it was designed specifically for the nation, unlike the universally applicable vehicles from the multinational automakers that were launched before it in the country.
The first time the one of its kind hatchback Tata Indica was displayed was during the 1998 Auto Expo. The Indica attracted attention because of its contemporary design. The Italian design studio I.DE.A Institute created the car’s body while the engine was made in-house. The combination of these qualities was the result of Sir Ratan Tata’s conceptualization.
He understood the needs of the buyers in the country and set out to the production of the vehicle that became synonymous with India. When compared to its rivals at the time, the Fiat Uno, Maruti 800, and Maruti Zen, the Indica looked and felt miles ahead. Additionally, the Tata Indica has more useful storage spaces than the Maruti 800. The interiors also have excellent finishes and a practical design and thus won a lot of hearts in the country.
Apart from creating some of India’s most iconic automobiles, Sir Ratan Naval Tata is also regarded as one of the world’s most generous philanthropists. He received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Cornell University College of Architecture and a management course from Harvard Business School in 1975.
He joined Tata in 1961 and worked on the Tata Steel shop floor. He then took over as chairman of Tata Sons after J. R. D. Tata retired in 1991. During his tenure, the Tata Group bought Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus in an attempt to transform Tata from a mostly Indian conglomerate into a worldwide corporation.
