Maruti Suzuki India Limited took the entire Auto Expo 2023 by storm after unveiling its long-awaited five-door Jimny. Although just prior to the show the country’s largest utility manufacturer Mahindra Auto also took the covers off of its RWD iteration of the lifestyle off-roader Thar. Even before the unveiling if the Jimny it was concluded by every enthusiast that these vehicles will go against each other in the country to fight for the best lifestyle off-roaders title in India.

6 airbags
With the increasingly stringent safety laws in the country, automakers have been compelled by the government authorities to increase the number of airbags in the new cars. And for this exact reason the Maruti Suzuki SUV has been launched with a whopping 6 airbags. The Mahindra Thar on the other hand only gets two airbags as standard.
Surround Sense powered by ARKAMYS
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny from the company comes equipped with a Surround Sense powered by ARKAMYS. This system comes with a four speaker setup. Meanwhile the Mahindra comes only with a standard infotainment system from Mahindra coupled with four speakers. (Fun fact the Kia Sonet and Seltos also come with Arkamys music system.)
Much bigger Touchscreen
The top end variant of the Mahindra Thar which is the LX gets a respectable 7 Inch Touch Screen Infotainment System with Navigation. Although when compared to the newly launched Jimny five-doors infotainment system its gets dwarfed. The Jimny gets a massive 10.5 inch infotainment system with Android auto and apple CarPlay (Wireless).
Headlamp Washers
Another one of the features which the Mahindra Thar misses out on is the availability of headlamp washers. The Jimny features this now rare amenity which even some of the more expensve models in the country also miss out on. This feature is of particular help when offroading in muddy terrains as its helps in cleaning the headlights without going to the front of the car.
4 doors for easy ingress and egress
This advantage may not be a long lasting one of the Jimny five door because soon Mahindra will also be launching the five door iteration of the Thar as well. Although for the time being the Jimny is the more practical of the two models. The Jimny with its four doors will provide a more easier ingress and egress for the passengers and the driver.
Solid front axle for better off road performance
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny comes available with a solid front axle which means that its gets improved traction over big bumps and hills as well as gains more torque from the differential as there are fewer parts that power must transfer through. Meanwhile the independent front front suspension on the Thar helps with more agility and maneuverability and offers the front wheels with greater articulation.
Projector headlamps
The Jimny from the factory comes equipped with an LED projector headlight setup, which everyone understands is a better for visibility. Meanwhile the Mahindra Thar on the other hand comes equipped with simple halogen headlights.
Much lighter car
Weight is one of the biggest differnciating factors when it comes to the capabilities of an off-roader. This is one of the reason that the spiritual predecessor to Jimny – the Gypsy was one of the most capable off-roader to be launched in India. The new Jimny has gross weight of 1545 kgs meanwhile the Thar on the other hand gets 2,214 kgs.
