The EV mobility craze is slowly gripping the Indian market. Affordable EV options like the Tiago EV, Comet and eC3 have certainly sped up the process. This has forced other manufacturers to take notice, including the market leader Maruti. It is working on the eVX, but what about an affordable option? Is it planning to launch the WagonR EV? In today’s article, let’s talk about the new Maruti WagonR EV.
Maruti’s EV plan
Maruti has been testing the WagonR EV for some time now. Of late, it had been thought that Maruti had cancelled the WagonR EV. However, at the launch of Invicto, Maruti showcased its EV plan, which includes 6 new EVs. It didn’t reveal the names but showcased silhouettes of the cars. In this, the third car seems to be the WagonR from its silhouette. Considering Maruti has the car ready, it does make sense, but there is a twist.
WagonR EV
In 2020 and 2021, the WagonR EV was regularly spotted testing around Maruti’s plant in Gurgaon. In 2022, it was spotted but since then nothing. Last year, there were even reports that Maruti had axed the WagonR EV. But this could mean that Maruti has done it for the time being, and it could be developing a new WagonR EV to be launched in future.
New Maruti WagonR EV – Is it needed?
Should Maruti bring a Maruti EV? There is certainly a case for it with the success of the Tiago EV. Also, even with the limited brand reach, Comet and eC3 have done quite well showcasing there is a market for such affordable EVs. However, we now think the WagonR EV could be launched after the eVX. That could mean a launch after 2025. Till then, Maruti could hope that the infrastructure develops well for city EVs like WagnoR.
