The last few years have been decent for Skoda in India. Though sales are not that high, they are at least constant. With the market moving towards EVs, Skoda knows if it plays this right it can be right into the thick of things. Along these lines, Skoda has started working on an affordable EV option for the Indian market. In today’s article, let’s talk about this affordable Skoda Electric car.

Volkswagen Group has previously stated its desire to introduce electric vehicles in India. Now, Skoda has confirmed that it is indeed studying the possibility of bringing an affordable battery-powered model to India. Speaking on the sidelines of Skoda’s entry into Vietnam, a senior Skoda official said that an affordable electric option is a necessity in India. This new affordable SUV will come after the launch of Enyaq in India. Skoda is targeting a price under Rs 20 lakhs for this EV.

The EV is still very much on the drawing board, as Skoda is yet to finalise its architecture. It is also in talks with several other manufacturers for potential cooperation. The brand is also evaluating the possibility of modifying and localising the VW group’s MEB architecture. According to rumours, Volkswagen Group is already in talks with Mahindra for a potential alliance that will result in co-developed and cost-effective EVs. Mahindra is already partnering with VW Group for its INGLO platform.

Another alternative is the MEB21F platform, which the group plans to employ on their affordable EVs abroad. This platform has some structural similarities to the MQB A0 architecture. The MEB21F platform is a bit cheaper due to its shorter wiring harness and effective cooling loops, with all the high voltage systems in the front axle. This platform can pack in batteries of over 50kWh in capacity.
