Tata Punch EV to get this range! More than 500km?

Tata is currently leading the EV segment in India. They have four EVs on sale right now and have planned to launch 10 new EVs by 2025. One of these planned products is the Tata Punch.ev and will probably be the first car to launch among these. We have already mentioned our expectations about the pricing and even mentioned details about what to expect with the SUV. However, in today’s article we are sharing everything about the expected battery pack and the range it will offer.

Gen-2 Battery for Punch.ev

To give you a brief of the Punch.ev, the SUV will be based on Tata’s Gen-2 platform. The Gen-2 platform, according to Tata Motors, is a much more advanced platform compared to the Gen-1 platform. The Gen-2 platform is basically compatible for EV with no modifications required. Now it seems Tata was very clear with their EV plans as according to the reports the Alfa and Omega arch platforms are EV-ready platforms.

So the Punch being based on the Alfa architecture, the EV iteration will be the Gen-2 based platform and will hence have its own benefits. Talking about the benefits, Tata will not really have to add any additional resources to make it EV compatible. Also, EVs based on Gen-2 will have longer range than Gen-1 EVs and also they will have faster charging capabilities than the Gen-1.

The motor on the Nexon.ev MR variant produces 127bhp and 215Nm of torque. However, Tata may continue with 127bhp of power but could restrict the torque output on the Punch.ev. Tata Motors are currently using the LFP battery pack in all their EVs. So we expect that they will continue with the same LFP battery pack for the Punch.ev. In a recent interview with The Hindu Businessline, Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors stated that the brand’s future EVs like Punch, Curvv and Harrier will have more range. He stated that these EVs could have a range of more than 500km. This type of range will be incredible, but will Tata offer more range on the Punch EV than the Nexon EV? Only time will tell.

Punch.ev as a product

Other than battery specs, the Punch.ev will be exactly the same as Punch ICE variants. It will have exactly the same exterior and interior design and elements. However, being an EV, it will have some blue accents inside and outside. It could also get the connected DRLs like the Nexon.ev and may also get redesigned alloy wheels which will add contribution to range. On the inside we are expecting a bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen system which was spotted before. It may be the same unit as the Nexon and may have a similar UI as well. We can also see a rotary styled gearbox unlike the lever on the petrol variant.

Features

We are also expecting some exclusive features for Punch.ev. The list includes – connected car technology on phone and watch from the base model, 6-Airbags on higher variants, leatherette upholstery, 45W Type-C charger, 360-degree camera, and wireless charging pad.

Launch and Pricing

Tata Punch.ev will be slotted between the Tigor EV and Nexon.ev. That said, we are expecting a price range of Rs 13.5 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) to Rs 17 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). For now we do not have an exact launch timeline but we can expect the launch to happen by the end of this year or by early next year.
