Affordable new electric cars and SUVs launching in 2024: What’s coming

Just a few years ago, electric cars were seen as expensive vehicles as most them commanded a huge premium. However, fast forward to today, we are seeing a number of carmakers offering electric cars in the affordable segment. This shift is happening because every automaker wants to become popular in the electric car segment. So if you are one of those electric car buyers looking for a new and upcoming affordable electric car in the country, then you have stumbled upon the right place. Here is the detailed list of all the affordable electric cars coming next year in 2024.

Punch EV

One of the first and most anticipated electric vehicle launches in the country will be the Tata Punch EV. The new EV will compete with the Citroen eC3 and is set to be launched around the end of January 2024. It will come powered by the same drivetrain as the Tata Tiago EV. This EV hatchback comes equipped with a 24 kWh battery pack that delivers an MIDC-certified range of 315 km. There is also a smaller 19.2 kWh battery pack available, offering an MIDC-certified range of 250 km. However, Shailesh Chandra, MD of Tata Motors, has announced that the car will be offered with a 500 km range.

Next up in the line of affordable electric cars is the Tata Curvv EV. This unique coupe SUV will be launched around March 2024. It will boast a unique sloping roof design and will be based on Nexon’s architecture. It will likely share its drivetrain with the Nexon EV facelift. Just like the Nexon EV facelift, the Curvv EV could also come with two different battery packs. The first could be a 30 kWh battery pack, while the other could be a larger 40.5 kWh battery, like the MR (Medium Range) and LR (Long Range) variants of the Nexon EV facelift. Currently, the Nexon EV facelift offers a 325 km and 465 km range in its MR and LR variants, however, the Curvv EV’s LR variant will offer around 500 km.

Tata Altroz EV

In addition to the above-mentioned SUVs, Tata Motors is also gearing up for the launch of the Altroz EV. As of yet, the timeline for its launch has not been revealed, but it will likely come next year. As for the powertrain, it will share the same powertrain as the Tata Punch EV and Tiago EV. However, there is no concrete information on the same. Some reports have stated that the company is aiming to offer around 500 km of range with this premium EV hatchback. As for the price, it will also be priced in the same range as the Punch EV at around Rs 10-12.5 lakh.

Mahindra XUV400 facelift

The country’s largest SUV manufacturer, Mahindra Automotive, is working on the development of the facelifted XUV400 EV SUV. The new model will be launched next year and will come equipped with updates such as ADAS and an extensively redesigned exterior and interior. No powertrain changes are expected, and it will likely come equipped with a front-mounted electric motor. This motor currently generates 150 PS of maximum power and 310 Nm of maximum torque. It is also likely to continue offering the EC variant with a 34.5 kWh battery, claiming 375 km of range, in addition to the EL variant that comes with a 39.4 kWh battery pack that claims to deliver 456 km of maximum range.

Mahindra XUV300 EV (New model)

Interestingly enough, Mahindra Automotive has also been reported to be working on the development of the XUV300 EV. This model will be part of the XUV300 lineup and will be offered with a smaller battery pack of 35 kWh, as opposed to the 40 kWh battery pack of the XUV400. It is believed that the XUV300 EV will be priced between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 17 lakh (ex-showroom). This makes it approximately Rs 2 lakh cheaper than the XUV400 EV.

Mahindra XUV.e8 (XUV700 electric)

Mahindra, towards the end of 2024, will be taking the covers off the XUV.e8 EV SUV. For those who may not be aware, this particular car is the electric version of the popular XUV700. It will boast a distinct EV-like exterior, including a closed-off grille and a few other design elements. As for the powertrain, Mahindra has stated that it will get an 80 kWh battery pack and an all-wheel-drive configuration with a dual-motor setup. It will be able to generate a maximum of 230 PS and 350 Nm of torque. This SUV will be directly competing with the Tata Harrier EV and Safari EV.

Maruti Suzuki eVX

The first fully electric vehicle from Maruti Suzuki will be the eVX compact SUV. It will be launched by the end of 2024 and will compete against the likes of the Tata Harrier EV and Hyundai Creta EV. According to reports, Maruti Suzuki will be offering this EV SUV with two battery pack options. The first will be a 48 kWh battery pack, and the other will be a 60 kWh battery pack. It has been stated by the company that the bigger battery pack variant will offer a range of around 550 km. As for the pricing, it could start from around Rs 20 lakh and go up to Rs 30 lakh.

Hyundai Creta EV

As mentioned earlier, the Maruti Suzuki eVX’s main competitor will be the Hyundai Creta EV. This all-electric version of the already popular compact SUV will be launched around the second half of next year. According to sources, Creta EV will come equipped with a 45 kWh battery pack. It will also get a front axle-mounted electric motor which will be able to generate around 138 hp of power and a robust 255 Nm of torque. It will be priced around the Rs 20-30 lakh range in India.

Citroen C3 Aircross EV

Citroen recently launched its C3 Aircross compact SUV in India. Now it is being speculated that the company will be soon launching an electrified iteration of this SUV. According to some sources, this SUV could get a 40 kWh battery pack offering it a range of around 400 km in a single full charge. As for the pricing, it could be launched around Rs 15-20 lakh, making it the most affordable compact electric SUV in India.

Hyundai Kona facelift

Hyundai has already launched the Kona electric SUV’s facelift in a number of international markets. However, it is planning to bring the same facelift to India as well. The new SUV will look a lot more modern than the outgoing model. However, most likely, the powertrain will remain the same. The current generation Kona comes equipped with a 39.2 kWh battery pack. It also gets a front axle-mounted electric motor producing a maximum power of 136 PS and a peak torque output of 395 Nm.
