Tata Nexon.EV production facility to be shifted: Details

Tata Motors is gearing up for a strategic move by shifting the production of the electric version of its well-received Nexon SUV from Pune to the newly acquired manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The facility was recently acquired by Tata Motors from Ford India, an automaker who exited India last year. The production of Tata Motors’ other electric cars – the Tiago.EV and Tigor.EV – already takes place at the Tata Motors’ Sanand factory.

The recent acquisition of Ford India Limited’s plant in Sanand has opened avenues for Tata Motors to focus on the production of electric vehicles. The Sanand plant, set to be fully operational by 2024, promises to unlock substantial manufacturing capacity, with the potential to produce up to 420,000 units annually. This move aligns with Tata Motors’ commitment to bolster its electric vehicle lineup and contribute to the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions.

While Tata Motors has not officially confirmed the shift, industry insiders suggest that the Nexon EV variant, currently manufactured at the Ranjangaon facility in Pune, is likely to transition to the Sanand plant once it becomes operational. This strategic decision emphasizes Tata Motors’ dedication to adapting to the evolving automotive landscape and capitalizing on the advantages offered by the newly acquired state-of-the-art facility.

A company spokesperson, responding to queries, stated, “Following our acquisition of a new, state-of-the-art facility earlier this year, we are evaluating other vehicles from our expanding portfolio that can possibly be produced in Sanand. The new plant will unlock an additional manufacturing capacity of 300,000 units per annum which is scalable to 420,000 units per annum.”

Tata Motors, a key player in the Indian automotive industry, has been a trailblazer in electric mobility. The Nexon model, a popular choice among consumers, has witnessed approximately 5 lakh units sold to date, showcasing the brand’s enduring appeal in the market.

While details about the shift are yet to be officially disclosed, sources reveal that Tata Motors is already engaged in advanced discussions with vendor partners. These discussions aim to facilitate the manufacturing of essential automobile components required for the Nexon EV model, ensuring a seamless transition and continuity in production.

The company’s acquisition of Ford’s manufacturing plant earlier this year, valued at Rs 736 crore, underscores Tata Motors’ strategic approach to fortifying its position in the electric vehicle segment. As the industry witnesses transformative shifts towards sustainable practices, Tata Motors continues to make strategic moves that align with the evolving needs of the market.
