Future of Diesel Engines?

For a long time, Nitin Gadkari has emphasized the need to reduce imports and develop domestic alternatives. One of the notable efforts in this direction is the increase in ethanol blending in petrol, which has risen from 1.53 percent in 2014 to 15 percent in 2024. The government aims to achieve E20 (20 percent blend) before October 2025.

Now, Gadkari announced that research on ethanol blending in diesel is at an advanced stage. The government is targeting to achieve 15 percent ethanol in diesel as part of its broad strategy to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. This move brings some respite to diesel car owners after the government announced its plans to eliminate petrol and diesel cars.

The union minister also emphasised creating an ethanol ecosystem and urged automakers to develop a flex-fuel engine. Currently, the government as part of its broader plans is setting up ethanol pumps in states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

The government is working on promoting CNG as a cleaner and greener alternative to petrol and diesel, alongside ethanol. Currently, the focus is on generating CNG through biomass such as rice straw. Research is also underway to convert solid waste into bio-CNG, which will help municipal corporations tackle the waste problem.
